I don't know what"s quirkier - how Calloway the cat was saved from a life without luxury or what I had to go through to get a her photo!
Peter Black, an avid golfer and self-professed cat lover, found Calloway starving, lonely and feral at Cottonwood golf course about four years ago. The vet guesstimates she was about three months old.
"It was a freezing cold November day,” Peter recalls, "and I saw this little black lump sitting on the cart path eating caterpillars.”
Peter figured it must be a kitten and although he had wanted one for a long time he was waiting for one to find him. Funny how things work out…
Being the avid golfer that he is, Peter and his buddies were unwilling to forgo the remaining three holes and wrapped the feline in a Calloway golf towel. Guess where she got her name…
I set out to meet Calloway and get her picture for this column earlier this week and that's when things started to get even quirkier.
Calloway is a very loving kitty but given her less than desirable start in life she"s also very skittish.
“She’s fine as long as nothing changes in her world,” Peter says. It turns out visitors to her home fit into the category of world change.
But we had a plan to get the photo I needed.
I arrived at Peter’s house at a predetermined time and called him from my cell phone to advise him I was at the top of the driveway. Calloway runs and hides, or cocoons as her owners call it, if she hears strange cars on the driveway.
Peter came to meet me. I gave him my camera and I entertained myself in the car for ten minutes to allow Peter the time to get a photo. We thought Calloway playing with some golf balls or sitting in a golf bag would be perfect.
No such luck.
The photo you see here was taken ages ago, by Peter. She’s watching golf on television.
I managed to see Calloway for only a moment, as she was fleeing from the room in protest of my disruption to her world.
