While most parents are digging broccoli out of the heating vent in the dining room, Lee Sanmiya's six year old son, Eric, is digging it out of Nanaimo"s Community Garden. The secret to getting kids to eat their veggies, she says is to "Start 'em young!” She adds that this particular variety, organic purple sprouting broccoli allows the kids to go around the garden and pick it themselves. “That’s so important I think. Whenever school kids come to visit you would not believe how many kids are totally unfamiliar with vegetables and how they grow and they’ll come and just start stuffing broccoli in their mouth.”
It’s unfortunate that kids who like broccoli fit into the “quirks’ category but with child obesity at an all time high, it’s safe to say that kids who eat their veggies with a smile on their face are a rare variety in today’s fast food pace.
